Progress To Date (Page Three)

( Back to previous page  Skip to next page )

By the beginning of June, we had removed all the body, stored the salvageable items, and hauled the rest away. We discovered that the side walls were in as bad shape as the roof. The driver's side wall literally fell to the ground with a crash when I shook it. (Apparently, the end-caps were all that was keeping it in place.)

We removed the floor by unbolting it from the frame and flipping it upside-down next to the motorhome. (Thanks, Jim, for coming over and helping with that little task.)

The floor was actually in very good shape but, like the rear end-cap, it's going to be easier to build a new one instead of modifying the old. (By the way, the rusty box full of holes on the left side of the picture ... that's the black water tank ... or, rather, what's left of it. I'm glad we never tried to use it.)

The primary support for the body was 1" x 2" rectangular steel tubing welded crosswise to the truck frame. This is one of the things I definitely plan to change, going to a less rigid system similar to that used on newer trucks.

The picture below shows the brake pedal assembly, which was the second rustiest part on the motorhome. (With the black water tank being the rustiest.) This is another thing that I definitely plan to modernize. To me, the existing system is too complex, too cumbersome, and too exposed for such a critical safety system.
